Unrealistic FSC for negative stain data: citation?

I think it’s fairly well known that FSC curves for negative stain reconstructions are often (usually) unrealistic. My own experience amply confirms this.

Does anyone know of a good citation for this “well known” fact, or any discussion of why this might be the case?

My own hypothesis is that radiation damage evaporates the internal structure and leaves a shell of stain that is sharply defined and that leads to unrealistically good resolution estimations. But I don’t know if anyone has ever tested, or even discussed this idea in the literature.

Thanks
