Installation of CS tools on latest Ubuntu LTS?

Hi,

What is the recommended way to install CS tools on the latest Ubuntu LTS?

The guide says to use pip:

https://tools.cryosparc.com/intro.html#installation

But recent Ubuntu LTS versions (e.g. 24.04) give an error when doing this:

 1 user@ANES002074D:~$ pip install cryosparc-tools
error: externally-managed-environment

× This environment is externally managed
╰─> To install Python packages system-wide, try apt install
python3-xyz, where xyz is the package you are trying to
    install.

If you wish to install a non-Debian-packaged Python package,
    create a virtual environment using python3 -m venv path/to/venv.
Then use path/to/venv/bin/python and path/to/venv/bin/pip. Make
    sure you have python3-full installed.

If you wish to install a non-Debian packaged Python application,
it may be easiest to use pipx install xyz, which will manage a
virtual environment for you. Make sure you have pipx installed.

    See /usr/share/doc/python3.12/README.venv for more information.

note: If you believe this is a mistake, please contact your Python installation or OS distribution provider. You can override this, at the risk of breaking your Python installation or OS, by passing --break-system-packages.
hint: See PEP 668 for the detailed specification.

Is it recommended to just use the override --break-system-packages flag, or is there a better way?

Cheers
Oli

I’d use miniforge and install it in a conda environment. I’ve made the mistake of installing extra bits (and ignoring warnings) for the Python the system is dependent on before, with the end result being pain…

I used Python 3.12, seems to be working but don’t have a cs license on this system to do anything with it.

conda create -n cstools python=3.12
conda activate cstools
pip install cryosparc-tools
