Ubuntu crashed. Need to re-install Cryosparc. What will happen to my projects?

My Ubuntu crashed while restarting the system. The service person said that we need to re-install the OS and this will lead to loss of any software/application installed in the system. I have following doubts:

  1. Do I need a new key to install cryosparc
  2. What will happen to all my Projects?? (I store my project data in external hard drive. So if I attach these external hard drive to the newly installed Cryosparc will I be able to continue my processing from where I stopped.
I have a single workstation (master and worker combined).

Define “crashed”?

If you can boot from a live image (e.g. Ubuntu Desktop Live DVD/USB) and the drives aren’t dead, you can archive everything CryoSPARC related (cryosparc_master, cryosparc_worker, cryosparc_database directories and all of the processing directories) which should them drop back in place provided you don’t move anything around. Or, if the drives are OK, you should also be able to set up cryosparc in the live environment by sourcing the relevant parts, back up the database and detach projects in the icli (@wtempel will be a better guide there). If you can, backing up the database is the minimum to do. Provided the database is OK and nothing is corrupted on your external drive, it should be fairly simple.

You may reuse the license ID you previously used, provided the “old” installation is disabled permanently.
Be sure to understand why

  1. and
  2. and

and take precautions against the underlying types of events.

Then, you should protect the external hard drive that holds CryoSPARC projects from any write access if/while you install the OS and CryoSPARC.
If, for some reason, you manage to restore the CryoSPARC database, be aware that operation of a restored database that is older than the latest changes in the CryoSPARC project directories may lead to corruption of those project directories. It is therefore safer to start with a blank database, and recreate user info, the worker target(s) (one target in the single workstation case) and project records as described in Warning: Could not get database status (attempt 1/3) - issue after storage outage - #4 by wtempel.

Our sys admin was able to recover the OS without any loss of data. Thank you everyone for the valuable advice.
