Defocus range plot

Hi. Could someone explain to me the meaning of the Defocus Range plot in Exposure curation? What is the difference with the average blur in the other graph?
Thanks
Stefano

Hi @stefanocapaldi!

When you perform Patch CTF Estimation, you measure the defocus landscape across the whole micrograph. The defocus range is the difference between the largest defocus and smallest defocus for a given micrograph.

By average blur, do you mean “Average Defocus”? The average defocus is the mean defocus of all the points in the micrograph.

Let me know if you have any more questions!

example causes of higher defocus RANGE would be tilted datasets and micrographs collected with higher beam-tilt (further from where the stage is parked), or micrographs with a large contaminant/ice chunk. it can be useful to remove outliers or separate the dataset into low and high range. Similar to motion, these are estimated/corrected/refined within the CTF but closer to 0 would be better.
