BPS CryoEM Subgroup Symposium 2025

Dear colleagues,

We are happy to announce the 2025 BPS CryoEM Subgroup Symposium, to be held on February 15th, 2025 from 8:30 AM to 12:30 PM, as part of the 69th Annual Meeting of the Biophysical Society in Los Angeles, California.

We have an exciting program, with invited speakers Wei Lü (Northwestern University), Bonnie Murphy (MPI Biophysics, Frankfurt), Marc Aurèle Gilles (Princeton), Beata Turoňová (MPI Biophysics, Frankfurt) and Kai Zhang (Yale). Our invited speakers will present on a wide array of topics within the broader field of cryoEM, including new methods for computational analysis of heterogeneity, cutting-edge in situ cryoET and cryoEM, temperature resolved cryoEM, and novel approaches to elemental mapping in single particle reconstruction.

We will also include five 10-minute short talks selected from submitted abstracts, highlighting exciting research from trainees, students and early career faculty.

This year, we are pleased to announce the establishment of a new prize, the June Almeida Award, which will recognize a mid/senior-level woman who has made outstanding contributions to the field of cryoEM during her independent career. June Almeida was the virologist who first identified the human coronavirus, so named for the ‘corona’ appearance of the virus particles using electron microscopy. It is in the spirit of June Almeida’s innovative research that this award is named. The awardee, in addition to receiving an honorarium, will present their research at the BPS CryoEM Subgroup Symposium. The deadline for nominations for the Almeida Award is November 1st, and details of the award and the application process can be found at (Subgroup Awards - The Biophysical Society). Nomination packets should be sent to bps.cryo.em.subgroup@gmail.com.

Finally, we will have a Subgroup Happy Hour at 33 Taps Bar in downtown LA on the evening of Subgroup Saturday (6:30-8:30pm), which will be open to all Annual Meeting attendees. Tickets are $30 USD, and can be purchased at the registration portal (Registration) under the “Subgroups and Dinners” section. Tickets include one drink, finger food, and the opportunity to socialize with your fellow subgroup members and speakers from the symposium!

Best,

BPS CryoEM Subgroup Committee:

Oli Clarke (Chair)

Liz Kellog (Chair-elect)

Gongpu Zhao (Treasurer)

Meghna Gupta & Pilar Cossio (Faculty Program Co-chairs)

Shi Feng (Postdoc Program Chair)
